Stockholm’s Exergi CCS project has been approved by the Land and Environmental Court

One of Europe’s first large-scale plants for carbon dioxide capture, will be built by Stockholm Exergi and it will be built in Stockholm, in Värtahamnen. This project has been made possible through permission provided by BECCS.

It was in March of 2023 that Stockholm Exergi presented an application to the Land and Environmental Court. This presentation asked for a permit to build a large-scale facility, which could be used for capturing biogenic carbon dioxide. This application has developed a long way, as it was on Thursday 11th of April 2024 that the Land and Environmental Court made the decision to grant an environmental permit for the facility.

This excellent decision made by the Land and Environmental Court, is a prerequisite for Stockholm Exergi, as this now leads them into the part of the process in which they must make an investment decision. After this next step is taken, the company will then be able to begin construction of the plant. At the moment, this process is going to plan and the company is aiming for the plant to be commissioned in 2027.

The Land and Environment Court, spoke about the permit they have granted Stockholm Exergi in a press release, saying, ‘The permit covers the construction and operation of facilities for separating carbon dioxide from flue gases from a biofuel-fired combined heat and power plant as well as compressing, liquefying and temporarily storing the separated carbon dioxide.’

Stockholm Exergi’s CEO, Anders Egelrud, commented, "This is historic for our company and for Swedish climate work. When completed, the facility will capture 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, which is more than the emissions from road traffic in Stockholm during the same period. This will help both Stockholm and Sweden reach their climate goals.”

Egelrud continued, "In addition to the licence, other important pieces need to fall into place before we make the investment decision. A crucial issue is how the state support system for BECCS is designed. The government is working on the issue and we hope that the support will soon be in place.”
