A partnership has been set up between Cloverdale Paint and Celanese to focus on paint with carbon capture
An innovative new method which has the ability to make sustainable paints has been created and commercialized by Celanese. This new method works through the use of CCUS and it converts waste emissions into renewable feedstocks.
This new collaboration which has begun between Cloverdale Paints and Celanese, is anticipated to utilise over one million pounds of carbon dioxide emissions on an annual basis. All of these emissions will go into products that are manufactured by Cloverdale Paint.
To do this, the technology that is used within the project gathers carbon dioxide emissions and applies hydrogen. Doing this prevents these emissions entering the atmosphere and has the effect of chemically converting the captured carbon dioxide into a methanol building block. This building block makes up a section of vinyl acetate-based emulsions which are used as a raw material during the manufacturing process of paints.
Doing this, not only reduces input fossil fuels, but also has the extremely beneficial effect of promoting a circular economy, whilst simultaneously significantly reducing carbon emissions on a larger scale in comparison to traditional processes. During this process CCU and fossil-fuel based feedstocks are commingled, but it is possible to accurately track them through mass balance accounting, as well as fostering transparency and finally, accountability around sustainable content.
President and chief operating officer, Cloverdale Paint, Darrin Noble, commented, “Our Green Guarantee showcases our commitment to a greener economy and environmental accountability through utilizing sustainable materials, optimizing processes to minimize waste, and reducing our carbon footprint throughout every phase of the company’s operations.”
Noble continued, “Our coatings are formulated not only for performance and longevity but also with a steadfast focus on sustainability, ensuring they actively contribute to environmental conservation. We uphold the highest environmental standards while delivering exceptional products that enable environmentally responsible choices. Partnering with Celanese is a significant step forward not just for Cloverdale Paint, but the paint industry as a whole.”
