Next steps for their UK carbon capture deployment project has been revealed by enfinium

A plan for two companies to take the next steps for their respective carbon capture projects has now been set in motion. Nuada is due to pilot its technology in West Yorkshire at the Ferrybridge-1 facility, whilst Kanadevia Inova is focused on deploying a carbon capture pilot plant at Parc Adfer, which is located in Wales.

Kanadevia Inova is well-known as a leading global clean technology company and Nuada is a British technology company.

Along these lines, enfinium has also revealed the next phase the company is preparing to start for its CCS pilot programme. This next step is to advance the company’s commitment to delivering CCS across its facilities. It has been confirmed that one of their projects, which is based in North Wales, specifically the company’s Parc Adfer facility in Flintshire, will soon become the only active carbon capture pilot within Wales and it will also be the first pilot to be deployed within the wider HyNet industrial cluster.

It has already been planned that in April of 2025, enfinium will make the move to relocate the CCS pilot plant, which at the moment is currently based at its Ferrybridge 1 facility in West Yorkshire, all the way to Parc Adfer. Further to this, it is agreed that the pilot plant will be installed and then operated by Kanadevia Inova. The purpose behind making this transition to Parc Adfer, is because this facility is currently a candidate for grant support through the UK Government’s Track-1 HyNet Expansion programme. On top of this, the facility and project have the potential to accelerate both economic growth, as well as decarbonisation throughout North Wales. All of this may become possible, however it is first subject to a positive decision, which will be made by the Government, during the coming months.

On the other hand, it has been confirmed that Nuada will be installing a new pilot plant at Ferrybridge and this plant will include an innovative metal-organic framework (MOF) technology, which is capable of capturing carbon dioxide from point sources through the use of a vacuum swing process. This new technology is very significant both for this project and for the carbon capture industry, as this particular kind of innovation clearly has the potential to deliver significant efficiencies, especially when it is deployed on a commercial scale.

Once the transfers have been made and the pilot projects have been set up, they will then run for a minimum of six months and from there they will become part of enfinium’s broader ambition. This ambition centres around deploying CCS across their six facilities within the UK and to do this they will be supported by investments, which will be provided in order to help all the parties involved achieve net zero emissions.

Right now, it is incredibly important that these targets are met because currently the Climate Change Committee’s Carbon Budgets show that the UK needs to be delivering carbon removals, in order to achieve a Net Zero economy.

CEO of enfinium, Mike Maudsley, commented, “To achieve net zero, the UK needs to produce carbon removals at scale. Energy from waste will play a critical role in delivering the millions of tonnes of durable carbon removals that are necessary for the UK to achieve net zero. By supporting the development of carbon capture technologies, we are advancing innovation in the UK while building our own understanding as we progress with our plans to deploy CCS across our six UK facilities.”

CEO of Kanadevia Innova, Bruno-Frédéric Baudouin, mentioned, “As we advance carbon capture successfully in the UK, we also advance public awareness of waste management infrastructure as a key driver of decarbonisation. This is what turns pilot projects into long-term net zero strategies at the national level. Through our partnership with enfinium, we are helping to turn the UK into the poster child for carbon capture adoption worldwide, and a great example for other countries to follow.”

Co-CEO of Nuada, Dr Conor Hamill, added, “We are excited to partner with enfinium, a leader in CCS deployment, to showcase the potential of our cutting-edge technology for full-scale implementation across EfW operations. Nuada is scaling up a capture technology that tackles the cost, energy, and integration challenges of incumbent solutions, to enable the decarbonisation of waste management and the delivery of effective carbon removals.”
