A new partnership over offshore power with CCS has been created between SBM Offshore and Ocean-Power

SBM-offshore and Ocean Power have agreed to collaborate on a project which will focus on a floating power generation hub with CO2 capture and storage. This project is innovative, plus it will be a huge benefit to the carbon capture industry and it is based in the North Sea.

One of the key reasons behind creating this partnership, is for the companies to be able to assess the technical feasibility and commercial readiness to collaborate on the concept. The project will remain exclusive to the Norwegian Continental Shelf, as well as the United Kingdom Continental Shelf.

The purpose of the hub is that it can be used to power offshore assets through submarine cables and this enables them to electrify the continental shelf, whilst causing minimal impact on the national grid. Furthermore, the hub makes all of this possible, whilst also balancing wind power capacity within a bi-directional transmission structure.

The plan for this project is for the offshore power hub to apply Ocean-Power’s proprietary ‘Blue Power Hub’ concept, in order to generate electricity offshore, through the use of gas turbines, in association with carbon capture and storage. The use of this method will lead to the creation of significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions.

Putting SBM Offshore’s industry-leading offshore experience, together with Ocean-Power’s technical concept development, creates the potential to explore joint business development initiatives, especially within the region.
