New CCS solutions will be developed for Entergy gas plant by Crescent Midstream

It has been made clear that the integrated CCS project in Louisiana, specifically Lake Charles, would have the ability to capture, transport and permanently store CO2. The CO2 that the project would be focused on storing is the carbon dioxide emitted from Entergy’s natural gas-fueled power plant.

Part of this project involves Crescent applying a large amount of onshore and offshore pipeline construction and operations experience. This will be done with the intention that it will help to facilitate the safe transportation of carbon dioxide that is captured from emitter and take it to underground storage facilities, where it will be kept permanently.

This prospective $1 billion project, which includes a collaboration with SAMSUNG E&A and the use of Honeywell capture technology, is due to be one of the largest CCS projects within the United states. The expectation on this project, is that it will capture a maximum of three million tonnes of CO2 every year, therefore preventing all of this CO2 being emitted along the Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Studies have shown that Louisiana is the second largest CO2-emitting state within the US. At the moment, most of these emissions are concentrated in the lower Mississippi River Industrial Corridor and statistics from the EPA have shown that these emissions add up to over seventy-two million tonnes of CO2 every year. Around 66% of the state’s CO2 emissions originate from industrial source and a further 13% come from electric power generation.

Right now, Crescent Midstream is supported by The Carlyle Group, which is a leading global alternative investment firm, who has $435 billion of assets that have been under management since June 30, 2024.

CEO of Crescent Midstream, Jerry Ashcroft, commented, “Corporate sustainability is a core value at Crescent Midstream. We are proud to apply our extensive midstream expertise to this project to create the vital connection between carbon dioxide emission sources and permanent underground storage. Large-scale carbon capture and sequestration has enormous potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and we look forward to helping demonstrate that in one of the highest emitting regions in the United States.”
