The FEED for the Alberta CCS project has been awarded to Babcock & Wilcox

Babcock & Wilcox was recently awarded a contract which provides them with the ability to conduct the front-end engineering and design (FEED) part of the project for Varme Energy’s planned waste-to-energy facility. This project will occur with CCS project in Canada.

It has been established through the contract that as part of the agreement, Babcock & Wilcox will carry out both engineering and design tasks for the plant’s waste-fired boiler, emissions control technologies, as well as post-combustion carbon capture system. Furthermore, it is planned that the proposed facility will be constructed northeast of Edmonton and it will be capable of processing a maximum of 200,000 tons of waste every year.

Once the FEED contract is complete, Babcock & Wilcox has estimated that the scope for the proposed project will include the design, supply and construction of the plant’s combustion grate, boiler and finally economizer. Alongside this, the scope will also include the design and supply of the air quality control system (AQCS) for things such as particulates, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxides, plus a carbon capture absorber and sorbent regeneration system.

B&W Chief Operating Officer, Jimmy Morgan, commented, “This initial engineering contract is an important first step in what we anticipate will be an exciting, large-scale municipal waste-to-energy with carbon capture and sequestration project. We’re pleased to partner with Varme Energy to help turn waste into a clean energy source with reduced greenhouse gas emissions.”
