Evergreen vessel has had its first onboard CCS installation certified by ClassNK
A ‘SCCS-Full’ notation has been awarded by ClassNK to ‘EVER TOP’ as Neopanamax container vessel owned by EVERGREEN. This notation means that the vessel now has an onboard CCS system and it is officially the world’s first Neopanamax container vessel to be retrofitted with this kind of system.
To make this possible, practical operations of the Onboard CCS System (OCCS) were performed by Panama Maritime Authority, Evergreen, Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute, and ClassNK
Shanghai Marine Diesel Engine Research Institute were responsible for designing the CCS systems and once they were ready, they were then installed by Huarun Dadong Dockyard Co., Ltd. (HRDD). To award the notation, ClassNK reviews the system components and the installation plan, ensuring it aligned with its comprehensive ‘Guidelines for Shipboard CO2 Capture and Storage Systems.’ Along with this, a risk assessment was carried out through Hazard Identification (HAZID), plus the onsite installation processes were also examined. Once confirmation of compliance with relevant requirements had been confirmed, the first ‘SCCS-Full’ notation was awarded to the vessel.
Since being awarded the notation, it was in April 2024 that the OCCS system, now installed upon Evergreen’s neopanamax container vessel was able to capture CO2 from its exhaust gas emissions. Once captured, it was then offloaded to a shore facility where it was recycled and from there, ClassNK confirmed an amount of the offloaded CO2, which was then deducted from the ship’s annual CO2 emissions. This part of the project took place through a CII assessment and was under direction of the Flag Administration of the Panama Maritime Authority.
ClassNK Corporate Officer / Director of Plan Approval and Technical Solution Division, Masaki Matsunaga, commented, “As the crucial action of first movers, ClassNK deeply respects the ambitious and practical application of CCS systems taken by EVERGREEN and involved parties to advance GHG abatement technology implementation. It is our great honor to be a part of this outstanding collaboration, and we are committed to supporting proactive initiatives toward decarbonization by providing appropriate standards, surveys, and certifications.”
