Elimini has been launched by Drax Group to aid the growth of BECCS in the US
The launch of a new US-based business that has a goal of leading the carbon removals market, whilst simultaneously driving renewable power with CCS has occurred. This business is called Elimini.
The predominant purpose of this business is to completely remove carbon and to accomplish this, Elimini has laid out a plan to gather engineers, environmentalists, communities, investors, and innovators. All of the people who will be involved in this project will be working together to scale the market for carbon removals and they will do this with the aim of transforming economies from carbon emitters to carbon removers.
To make a start on this plan, the innovative company will put 24/7 renewable energy production together with carbon capture technology and this will be made possible through BECCS. Currently, BECCS is the only technology which is able to support the delivery of both targets at the same time.
Since it was set up, Elimini has entered eleven carbon dioxide removal deals which involve eight companies. Plus, Elimini has also been able to create an Advisory Council and on top of this, the company has created four knowledge collaborations, which work to advance research and understanding within carbon dioxide removal technologies. At the moment there are more than twenty potential sites that are under review in North America which are viewed as potential BECCS facilities. Alongside these, there are also other projects which are under consideration in six other countries.
Whilst Elimini will be focusing on growing and developing the part of the project mentioned above, as they are also an independently operated, wholly owned subsidiary within Drax Group, part of Elimini’s role will also be to sell carbon removals generated at Drax Power station. This is the location which conducted the first BECCS pilot of its kind in Europe and the plan for this facility, is that once it is provided with the correct government support, it will be converted to BECCS.
Elimini Executive Chair and Drax Group CEO, Will Gardiner, commented, “Carbon removals are desperately needed to reverse the legacy emissions warming our planet – and that industry represents more than a $1 trillion opportunity once it reaches gigaton scale. Elimini will have the focus and agility needed to become a leader in the maturing carbon market, rapidly advancing high-quality carbon removals and renewable energy production at global scale.”
