Denmark and the Netherlands have signed an agreement that expresses mutual intent to advance CCUS development and deployment, announced the Danish government on August 18.

In the agreement, both countries highlight the EU objective of reaching climate neutrality by 2050 and stress the importance of CCUS technology for achieving the target. The announcement stated Denmark and the Netherlands recognise that regional cooperation and cross-border infrastructure is crucial for the development of CCUS.

Danish Minister for Climate, Energy, and utilities Dan Jørgensen said: 

“The climate crisis cannot be solved by each country individually; it needs transnational solutions. With this agreement, Denmark and the Netherlands have agreed to promote the regional development of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage so that we together can rid the atmosphere of some of the greenhouse gas emissions that normally are difficult to reduce.”

“The potential of these technologies is huge and by working closely together, Denmark is not only realising our national goal of net zero by no later than 2050, but we are also paving the way for a greener Europe.”

Under the agreement, both nations will advance topics of mutual interest such as supporting the integration of CO2 removals as negative emission technologies into EU climate policy, exploring the need for a bilateral agreement to enable cross-border transportation and storage of C02, Carbon Capture World News understands. 

In addition, the countries will share knowledge on latest technologies, geographical infrastructure and relevant experience related to CCUS.  

The State Secretary for Economic Affairs and Climate Policy of the Netherlands, Hans Vijlbrief, said:

“The Netherlands is a strong supporter of international cooperation with regards to CCUS. Working together on research and development of CCUS technologies can help accelerate deployment, improve their environmental performance and also reduce costs. 

“We recognise that not all European countries have access to suitable storage sites for CO2. In this regard it is paramount to find regional solutions to maximise the emission reduction potential of CCUS across the continent.”
