CO2 injection has been started at Poseidon by Carbon Catalyst
)
A new project has been started by Poseidon and it has been suggested that this company’s main aim will be to reach an initial annual injection rate of forty million tonnes. Due to this aim and the company’s potential one billion tonnes storage capacity, it is already clear that Poseidon will soon become one of the largest Carbon Capture & Storage projects based within Northwest Europe.
During operation, the Poseidon injection test uses Petrodec’s Erda rig, this is the company’s choice because it is specially equipped for the injection of CO2 into the H compartment of the Leman depleted gas field, located in the UK Southern North Sea.
This project is incredibly significant because it is the first of it’s kind to operate within UK waters and provided that the injection test goes well, the project will move forwards to the next step, FID. The plan is for the project to reach the FID stage by 2027 and from there, it plans to reach first commercial storage in 2029.
Executive Director at Carbon Catalyst, Nick Terrell, stated, “CCL is delighted to announce the start of CO2 injection at Poseidon. This project has the potential to play a very significant role in decarbonising both the UK and Continental European economies. As such, reaching this milestone is an extremely positive step in derisking the project and advancing it towards commercial viability.”
