Challenges around measuring biogenic CO2 are being addressed by ENVEA

ENVEA has made a major breakthrough and has been able to develop a tool, which is capable of calculating potential cost savings, by being able to accurately measure biogenic carbon dioxide in Waste-to-Energy (WtE).

Biogenic CO2 is carbon dioxide which is released from various sources, including plants and animals. Therefore, because it is part of the natural carbon cycle, it is possible to deduct biogenic CO2 from reported emissions. This has the beneficial effect of leading to savings through carbon credits, when WtE falls under the Emissions Trading Scheme which was established in 2028, as well as any regional carbon tax schemes.

A huge benefit of this new development is that it is easy to integrate it into systems which already exist. Furthermore, the development also includes pre- and post-sampling leak checks, which are performed in order to help ensure precise sample flow, as well as fail-safe oversaturation. Along with this, the system also makes sure that the plant’s wider sensor network is integrated, in order to enable precise data collection.

The groundbreaking and unique calculator which ENVEA has created is free to use and supplies users with an accurate estimate of their potential cost savings. Through following the process of inputting data which includes total tonnes of waste in a year, along with currency, market price for biogenic carbon dioxide per ton and finally, the percentage of biogenic content in waste, consumers are then able to proceed and click calculate. Once this is done, the estimated cost savings result will instantly be shown.

It has already been suggested that the AMESA-B smart sampler could be the ‘turn-key’ solution to enabling accurate biogenic CO2 reporting, which will be extremely beneficial in aiding consumers when it comes to meeting regulations. One of the best things about this invention, is that it means that guesswork is no longer necessary when it comes to CO2 greenhouse monitoring through the flue gas sampling. Moreover, it also fulfils the requirements of EN ISO 13833 standards, which ultimately results in accuracy and traceability which will be incredibly difficult to beat.

Regulatory Director, Jürgen Reinmann, commented, “Measuring biogenic CO2 emissions is essential for complying with regulations and global efforts to reduce carbon dioxide greenhouse gases. Operators often face several challenges in accurately reporting biogenic CO2 emissions, which is why ENVEA has developed a calculator tool to help them estimate potential biogenic CO2 cost savings.”
