Carbon8’s CCUS methodology has been validated by DNV

It was recently announced by DNV, that they have verified Carbon8’s patented technology and DNV has also confirmed that the company’s methodology meets the ISO 14064 part 2 standard requirements. This technology works through permanently capturing CO2 at source from hard-to-abate industries.

Carbon8 chose DNV to perform this validation and to authenticate its methodology, as Carbon8 was very eager to display their authenticity, quality and traceability. The DNV used the ISO 14064 part 2 requirements to determine whether they could verify the company’s work. These standards related to quantifying, monitoring, and reporting any activities, techniques, or processes that could be helpful when it comes to reducing carbon/greenhouse gas emissions.

On top of this, the technology has also displayed the ability to divert landfill-bound ashes and residues, which resulted in transforming these into material, which could go onto being used within quality construction products. Following through with this potential, mean that anything that was converted into this material could go into turning the built environment into a carbon sink.

When the DNV validated the methodology which Carbon8 had both designed and used, the DNV provided the following reasons for doing so.

‘Provides accurate reporting, eliminating the risk of double counting or inclusion of unsupported removals.’ Another reason included, ‘Measures emissions reduction/removal accurately, accounting for equipment manufacture, operation, and disposal emissions.’ Their final reason was that the methodology, ‘Establishes stringent, transparent, and repeatable monitoring procedures.’

Regarding the technology, Head of CCUS, Energy Systems at DNV, Jamie Burrows, commented, “Some utilization techniques such as that developed by Carbon8 can capture and store CO2 with a high level of permanence. Such techniques will become increasingly important in the coming years and can be particularly beneficial in locations where CCS might not be an option due to a lack of supportive policy or infrastructure. In addition to producing materials that can be used in established value chains, coupled with biogenic sources of CO2, such techniques can generate Carbon Dioxide Removals with a high level of permanence.”

Carbon8’s Chief Commercial Officer, Maarten van Roon, added, “Our main ambition for this methodology is to provide confidence in our technology to customers across industries. The telemetry in our operations provides a dataset that delivers transparency around quantity and provenance, underpinned by the recognition of a highly respected validation partner in DNV.”
