4.5M euros has been awarded to Cool Planet through EU funding

In January of 2025, ICO2NIQ (Innovative Electrochemical CO2 Conversion to Versatile Feedstock) will be launched and this is a fourteen million euro project, which falls inside the Process4Plant partnership, which is part of the Horizon programme. Through being part of this project, Cool Planet will be responsible for deploying a 10,000 tonnes per year capacity CO2 capture plant. This will mean that it will supply TUPRAS’ Izmit refinery in Turkey with their advanced membrane technology.

The 4.5 million euros which Cool Planet is soon due to receive from the EU Horizon Programme, is part of the ICO2NIQ project.

It has already been planned that from January 2027, this plant will be able to deliver CO2 to a collection of companies who will in turn, jointly deploy their own technologies, with the intention of converting captured CO2 into valuable commercial feedstock. Once this task is completed, these feedstocks will then go forwards to be used in a variety of ways.

Furthermore, the project, which is currently being focused on, will see the first deployment of Cool Planet’s 4th Generation membrane module. This module will be incredibly significant as they will be optimised for automated mass production and therefore they will have twice the capture capacity that the 3rd Generation modules had. This will result in the already compact technology becoming even smaller and consequently reducing the cost.

Cool Planet’s upcoming projects are planning to use the new modules for their up to mega-tonne per annum scale and on top of this, the company also plans to use the membranes manufactured by Cool Planet within a new production facility.

Managing Director of Cool Planet, Andrew Corner, stated, “We are delighted to have been selected to participate in this significant and highly important CO2 capture and utilisation project. We greatly look forward to working with our new partners on delivering a full chain valorisation of the CO2 that Cool Planet’s advanced membrane technology will capture. The utilisation of Cool Planet’s capture technology at an oil refinery will add a new industry alongside cement, steel and coal fired power generation where the technology has already been successfully demonstrated. This project also illustrates Cool Planet’s continued commitment to ongoing research and development and the further enhancement of our existing highly efficient capture process.”
